Honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways?
九年级英语试卷 第2页(共8页)
Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees (黑猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (猎食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, hides its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others hide their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know that a thief is watching them. So they go back later, dig the food, and hide it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying \"You can't fool Mother Nature.\" But maybe you can’t trust her, either.
( )31. A plover protects its young from a predator by ______.
A. getting closer to its young B. pretending to be hurt C. leaving its young in another nest D. driving away the adult predator

A. Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others. B. Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back. C. All the animals survive by fooling other animals.

( )34. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. How do animals learn to lie? B. Does Mother Nature fool animals? C. Do animals lie? D. How does honesty help animals survive?

What is your fate? Who or what gets to decide it? Are you born with a certain fate? Do your parents decide your fate? Does your college major decide your fate? Perhaps the new Nezha film can help answer these questions.
This August saw something unexpected happen in the Chinese box office. Nezha, a Chinese animated film, has gone beyond all expectations. It beat all the other films and topped the Chinese box office. The film is now the second highest--grossing (票房收入最高的) movie in China--only behind Wolf Warrior 2. Its success has opened a path for China’s animation industry to do well.

Because everyone treats him differently, Nezha spends his time causing chaos. He enjoys playing tricks on others. However, upon learning his fate, Nezha refuses to give in. He chooses to fight a flash of lightning from the sky. By saving everyone, he becomes a great hero.
The success of Nezha has changed the fates of many, including the director, Jiaozi. Jiaozi was a medical student at first. Four years ago, we asked ourselves: what if we could create a shopping experience with no waiting in lines and no checkout? Or could we create a physical store where customers could simply take what they want and go? Our answer to those questions is Amazon Go, where you could experience the idea of “just walk out shopping”.
Amazon Go is a new kind of store with no checkout required. We created the world’s most advanced shopping technology, so you never have to wait in line. With our “just walk out shopping” experience, simply use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products you want, and go! No lines, no checkout.
Our checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. Our “just walk out technology” automatically detects(探测) when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in your virtual cart(购物车). When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after, we’ll charge your Amazon account and send you a receipt.
We offer delicious ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made fresh every day by our on-site chefs and favorite local kitchens and bakeries. Our choice of foodstuff is from bread and milk to cheeses and locally made chocolates. You’ll find well-known brands we love, plus special finds we’re excited to introduce to customers. For a quick home-cooked dinner, pick up one of our chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits, and you can make a meal for two in about 30 minutes.
Our 1,800-square-foot shopping space is conveniently compact (紧凑的), so busy customers can get in and out fast. It is located at 2131, 7th Ave, Seattle, WA, on the corner of 7th Avenue and Blanchard Street. All you need is an Amazon account(账户), a supported smartphone, and the free Amazon Go app.

Everyone has traits (特性) that make us who we are. We have physical traits, like red hair, long legs and funny-looking toes. We also have character traits including humor, warmth, creativity and so on.
Certain physical traits are fully inherited (遗传), such as blue eyes and knobby knees. About 25,000 to 35,000 genes (基因) are in a single cell in the human body. These genes carry the traits that are passed down genetically from parents to their children.
Many traits exist between inheritance and development — the interaction with environment. One example is body shape. It tends to be passed down from parents. But once diet becomes a factor, environment begins to play an important role in how the body develops. Body shape is a trait that is a mixture of inheritance from parents and influence of environment.
So lots of our most important traits have been learned, rather than inherited. For example, if you’re really great at video games, it’s not because your parents passed down the skills in genes. It’s because you have practiced a lot of video games and developed those skills yourself. If you have kids who turn out to be great at video games, it is because they put in the hours, learned the skills, and memorized the moves that are necessary to play the video games well.
Of course, some of us have brains that are more advantageous to video game playing. Say you were born with a large and powerful part of the brain that controls your hand-eye coordination. That is inherited. What you do with it, how you choose to develop that advantage, is up to you.
You can pierce your nose or get a tattoo (纹身) — it doesn’t matter how much you change your body during the lifetime. None of those things will turn into genetic material to be passed down to the next generation. However, if your children grow up in an environment with role models who are pierced and covered in tattoos, they are more likely to get piercings and tattoos! ( )42. _______ is a physical trait that is fully inherited.
A. The pierced nose B. The special diet C. The body shape D. The eye color
( )43. What does the underlined word “That ” refer to ?
A. Your hand-eye coordination. B. Advantageous brains. C. The shape of your brain. D. Video game playing.

A. character traits can hardly change during the lifetime
B. environment plays an important role in traits development C. a kid’s hand-eye coordination isn’t related to inheritance D. the skills of video game playing are passed down to kids

China’s “four great new inventions” in modern times have made the daily life of the public more and more convenient. They are the high-speed railway (HSR), shopping online, shared bikes and mobile phone payment.
Living in Hong Kong, I knew them from the papers, the TV and the Internet. But last month I had the chance to experience all of them.
As usual, the golden week stopped the traffic. It was hard to get a railway ticket anywhere in the train stations. But I bought a train ticket to Beijing on the Internet and paid for it through Zhifubao. It was even cheaper than it was bought in the station. Then we got on the high-speed train. I was shocked at its speed and quietness. There was no noise which the train made while running. It was reported that China has the longest high-speed railway in the world, which is regarded as a “name card” for China.
China’s HSR has also gone abroad. In 2014, China finished building its first foreign high-speed rail in Turkey. In June 2015, China and Russia agreed to build the 770 km of high-speed railway connecting Moscow and Kazan. In October 2015, China helped Indonesia to build a high-speed rail between Jakarta and Bandung.
Did I feel bored during the trip on the train? Not at all. I bought many cheap and good things in Taobao and Tmall on the Internet through my mobile phone. It’s amazing that there

are oceans of products in Taobao and Tmall.
Soon we arrived in Beijing. We got on a bus near the train station. After getting off the bus, my friend told me that the bus stop is far from his home. I thought we would have to spend much money going to his home on a taxi, but it seemed that he wasn’t worried about that. He showed me some bikes on the side of the street. They are called shared bikes. We only need to use our mobile phones to scan the Quick-Response code (二维码) on shared bikes, and then we could ride the bikes anywhere we wanted to go. It was so cool! 76. What is regarded as a “name card” for China?
