My Big University Adventure
Hi friends! My name is Emily and I'm 8 years old. Today I'm going to tell you all about the super cool university near my house that my older brother Matt goes to. It's called Greenwood University and it's the best place ever!
Let me start by telling you about the campus. The Greenwood campus is HUGE! It covers over 500 acres of land with lots of big old trees and grassy areas. My favorite part is the main quad right in the center. It's this giant open area with pathways crisscrossing and benches to sit on. Sometimes there are even cute squirrels running around! Matt says it's a great place to hang out between classes and study.
Speaking of classes, there are classroom buildings
everywhere you look on campus. The biggest ones are Williams Hall for sciences like biology and chemistry, and Jameson Hall for humanities like English and history. Those two buildings are super old with ivy growing up the sides – they've been around since the 1800s! My brother has classes in both of them. He says some of the lecture halls are really big and can fit hundreds of students. I can't even imagine!
Greenwood has dorms where students live too. Matt lives in a dorm called Maple Hall. He shares a room with another guy named Steve and they have tiny little bedrooms connected by a common area. He gets meals at the dining hall in the basement. I've been there before and the food is actually pretty good! My favorite is the make-your-own pizza station. Mmm!
If students don't want to live in dorms, there are apartments right on campus too. My brother's friend Jessica lives in the Campus East apartments in a two-bedroom place she shares with her boyfriend. She has her own kitchen so she can cook whenever she wants. I'm jealous!
There's so much cool stuff for students to do at Greenwood besides just go to class. Matt takes me to the huge rec center sometimes to swim in the pools and play basketball. There's also an amazing library called Calder Library right in the middle of campus. It's seven stories tall and has millions of books! Can you believe that? My brother likes to study in the quiet reading rooms on the upper floors.
If you get hungry, there are tons of places to eat on campus. My favorite is the student union building which has a food court with all different restaurants – Mexican food, pizza, burgers, you name it! But Matt says the best food is actually at the little cafés
around campus run by local businesses. His favorite is a coffee shop called Brewed Awakenings where you can get fancy coffees and baked goods. Yum!
Sports are really big at Greenwood too. Their football team is one of the best in the country! Matt takes me to the games sometimes at the giant stadium called Maxwell Field. It holds over 80,000 people and gets super loud when our team scores a touchdown. Go Greenwood Bears! There are also a bunch of other sports teams like basketball, soccer, baseball, and even quirky ones like lacrosse.
I almost forgot to mention all the awesome events that happen on campus. Every spring they have this huge fair called Greenfest with rides, games, food trucks and even a circus! My brother takes me every year and it's always a blast. In the fall, they have Halloween frights and horror movie nights. And in December, they decorate the whole campus with twinkly lights for the holidays. It's so pretty!
You can probably tell that I absolutely love Greenwood University. It's such an amazing, vibrant place full of so many cool things to do and see. I really hope I get to go there for college someday too! Although that's still 10 whole years away for me. Being a student there must be the best.
My brother says Greenwood isn't just a place, it's a community where you make friends for life. Everyone is so school-spirited and has such Greenwood pride! There are hundreds of clubs and activities to get involved in too. Matt is part of an outdoor adventures club where they go hiking and camping. How cool is that?
I could honestly go on and on about Greenwood all day. It has state-of-the-art research facilities, famous professors who are experts in their fields, amazing performing arts centers, fascinating museums... the list is endless! I'm so lucky to have such an incredible university right here in my hometown.
If any of you foreign friends ever get the chance to visit, you absolutely must take a tour of the Greenwood campus. Just being there gives you
