Have you ever heard of the proverb(格言) “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise?” It was written by Benjamin Franklin. Another famous proverb is “ A penny saved is a penny earned”, which means money should not be wasted. People like to use proverbs because they usually have deep meanings. Here is an interesting collection of proverbs about love.

Some people say “Absence makes the heart grow fonder(多情的)”. That means you love someone even more when he or she is far away.

Another proverb says “love is blind”. In other words, when you are in love with someone, you may refuse to see anything bad about the person.

Here is another popular saying about love: “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Some people believe that a woman can win a man’s love if she cooks his favorite foods. Some people only want to love someone who is very good-looking. You might tell them that “Beauty is only skin deep.” What a person looks like is not really important.

All in all, those proverbs are quite interesting sometimes. If you try to memorize some of them in your English study, you may find a lot of fun when talking in English. So, please have a try. “Action speaks louder than words.”

31. “A penny saved is a penny earned” means you should ________. A. make more money

B. find a job

C. save money

D. work harder

32. The proverb “_________” is almost the same as the one “Never judge(判断)a person by his look”? A. Love is blind

B. Absence makes the heart grow fonder

C. Beauty is only skin deep D. The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach

33. How many proverbs are there in this passage talking about love? A. 3

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words. However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t

4

D. 6

sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

34. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human

beings are ______. A. clever

B. crazy C. lazy D. dull

35. According to the passage ______.

A. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree B. there should be egg in an eggplant C. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different D. boxing rings should be round

36. Which of the following is the correct plural?

A. Beeth.

B. Geese.

C. Meese.

D. Tooth.

37. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?

A. A wise man and a wise guy. B. Overlook and oversee. C. Quite a lot and quite a few. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.

6

D

During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape. When I traveled across to the other side of the island, I could see the other islands, and I said to myself, \"Perhaps I can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day.\"

So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe (独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How silly I was! Why didn't I think before I began work? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn't move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn't move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.

That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I did not try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, not my prison, and I was just happy to be alive. A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island. I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.

My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make. I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.

I kept food and tools at both my houses, and also wild goats. There were many goats on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats' milk to drink every day. I also worked hard in my corn (玉米) fields. And so many years went by. 42. The purpose of making a canoe on the island was to _____________. A. escape in it B. get to the other side of the island C. use it for food D. go around the island

43. To survive, the writer did the following EXCEPT _____________. A. keeping goats for milk B. making clothes from animal skins C. working in the cornfields D. going fishing in the sea 44. Why didn't the writer use his first canoe? A. Because it was too small for a long journey.

7

B. Because it was too heavy to get down to the sea. C. Because there was something wrong with it.

D. Because the writer was busy building a second house. 45. From the story, we can learn that _____________.

A. the writer tried to make his stay comfortable on the island B. the writer had nothing to do on the wild island

C. the writer tried to escape in the second canoe, but failed D. the writer was in prison on the island, losing his freedom

五、阅读表达。(共5小题,计10分)

阅读短文,根据题目要求完成各小题。

People have always been imagining what the future world will look like. The answers are quite simple and here you have them for the next 150 years.

The world has changed a lot in the last 150 years, but we humans are driven by the same basic needs ① we were 150 years ago: food, sleep, the feeling of being appreciated and loved. Will this change in the next 150 years? No.

Predicting the future is important for two reasons: first we need to start to think about what kind of future we would like for ourselves and to pass on to the next generation, and then ②we need to know what decisions we need to make today that will bring the best result in the future. Flying cars have been pictured for the future for a long time, but is it realistic? I'm sorry, there will be no road network for flying cars in the next 150 years.

It is more likely that there are other lives in the universe. It is believed that our solar system is about 4.6 billion years, and other civilizations could be 10 million or even 1 billion years ahead of us. With these numbers in mind there is no greater chance that they will make contact with us within the next 150 years than in 100,000 years.
