Years ago, when I was starting exploring the world—making my first trips to Africa,Asia and the Arctic—I made the decision not to take a lot of,or in some cases, any photographs.
At the time,I believed looking at the world through a camera prevented my ability to see what was really in front of me and to notice what mattered.I thought that trying to take pictures took me out of the moment and made me pay more attention to constructing an image rather than focusing on what I was experiencing.
However, today I take plenty of photos, not just on my journeys but almost every day when I notice an interesting mushroom while walking the dog with my wife, watch the cloud formations before a storm or admire an artful display of flowers at a local coffee shop.
I still think that the act of photography can be disturbing, certainly in a time when we all have powerful cameras in our pockets and one of the planet’s biggest platforms for engaging with others is fueled by a steady flow of images. But I also understand now that taking pictures can be a way to pause, consciously capture a moment in time and make better sense of the world around us.
That’s what our phenomenal photographers do for our magazine. And it’s why I'm so pleased that we have made this month’s magazine immerse(使沉浸)you in that work.
Of course, these professionals have a much more different relationship with photography than I do.Their work is creatively, intellectually and logistically challenging in ways that most of us amateur photographers can hardly imagine. For them,it is an art and a science that they’ve perfected—a way to stop us in our tracks and make us pay attention to a story that needs to be told. 4.Why did the author avoid taking photos when starting exploring the world? A.He had to save money for more trips.
B.He wanted to enjoy the trips to the fullest. C.H e was unaware of constructing an image. D.He couldn’t afford to buy a suitable camera. 5.What makes the author take lots of pictures now? A.His deep love for travel. B.The complexity of the world. C.The popularity of photo—sharing. D.His new understanding of photography. 6.What can we learn about the author? A.He works for a magazine. B.He is difficult to deal with. C.He is bad at taking pictures. D.He has a less promising career. 7.What does the author think of professional photography?
A.Confusing. B.Demanding. C.Unrealistic. D.Conservative.
C Some fish can recognize their own faces in mirrors, which is an ability usually belonging to humans and other animals considered particularly brainy, scientists report.Finding the ability in fish suggests that self-awareness may be far more widespread among animals than scientists once thought.
“It is believed widely that animals that have larger brains will be more intelligent than animals of the small brain,”says animal sociologist Masanori Kohda.“It may be time to rethink that assumption.”
Kohda’s previous test involves exposing an animal to a mirror and then secretly putting a mark on the animal’s face or body to see if they will notice it on their reflection and try to touch it on their body.Previously, only a handful of large-brained species passed the test.
In a new study, cleaner fish that passed the mirror test were able to distinguish their own faces from those of other cleaner fish in still photographs.Kohda’s team exposed wild-caught cleaner fish
in separate tanks to mirrors for a week. The researchers then painted just beneath the fish’s throats, making marks that look like parasites(寄生虫).When the marked fish saw themselves in mirrors, they began striking their throats on rocks or sand in the bottom of the tanks, apparently trying to scrape(刮)off the marks. But they did not scrape when shown a photo of another fish with a mark.
This suggests that the fish identify themselves in the same way humans are thought to—by forming a mental image of one’s face,Kohda and his colleagues report.
“I think it’s a great step.”says comparative cognitive psychologist Jennifer Vonk, who wasn’t involved in the study. But she would like to see more work done before drawing conclusions about what’s being represented in the mind of a fish.“As with most other studies,it still leaves room for further follow-up.”
Kohda’s lab has more experiments planned to continue to explore what’s going on in the brain of the cleaner fish, and to try the method on another popular research fish. 8.What is the previous assumption concerning animals’ intelligence? A.Small-brained animals are less smart. C.Fish are as brainy as human beings.
B.Most animals have self-awareness. D.Fish recognize themselves naturally.
9.What did the researchers do to the cleaner fish in the new study? A.They observed them in natural habitats. B.They made parasite-like marks on them. C.They helped them to get rid of parasites. D.They let them keep still for a whole week.
10.What does Jennifer Vonk expect Masanori Kohda and his team to do? A.Release fish into the wild. C.Conduct further research.
B.Draw conclusions quickly. D.Abandon a similar method.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Fish Enjoy Using Mirrors C.Brains Determine Intelligence
B.Being Self-aware Is Common D.Fish May Have Self-awareness
D
When you refer to play therapy(治疗),it’s most often in reference to children, but the elements of play can be conducive to adults, too,The New York Times reports. While it might be more difficult for adults to engage in play, the outcome can be part of the path to essential wellbeing(幸福).“Play is enormously important,”Catherine Price, author of The Power of Fun:How to Feel Alive Again, said.“We’re such perfectionists,so to find a context in which you can let down your guard,it is incredibly relaxing and helps to get fun.”
Play therapy is a technique that originated in the field of psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, where a trained therapist observes participants while they engage in play and follows their lead. This approach is rooted in the belief that as children learn how to interact with the world and develop skills through play,it serves as a natural form of self-expression for them.During play, children may act out their emotions either directly or symbolically, providing a therapist with valuable insights into their emotional states.
Playfulness is an attitude and action that can lead to a more lighthearted and enjoyable daily experience, and it can be developed by anyone, explains Price.Playfulness grows when perfectionism is absent,as it requires surrendering to(屈服于)the present moment. To let yourself become open to the opportunity to any fun activity, ask yourself,“What’s the worst that could happen?”This simple question can develop a playful mindset, one that accepts absurdity and the ability to laugh at oneself.A“yes, and”approach, inspired by comedies, can also be helpful, where you build on whatever suggestion presented to you, whether it’s by a scene partner or a friend or child.
Psychiatrist Stuart Brown, author of Play:Hot It Shapes the Brain,Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul, emphasizes that play is fundamental.By letting go of expectations and pressure, you can increase your chances of truly enjoying yourself.
12.Which of the following best explains the word“conducive”underlined in paragraph 1 ?
A.Close. B.Similar. C.Beneficial. D.Equal. 13.How can play therapy help the participants?
A.They can express themselves freely. B.They can better understand others. C.They can become perfectionists. D.They can hold a strong belief. 14.What is the key to developing playfulness according to the text? A.Avoiding perfectionism. B.Recalling the past. C.Seeking a sense of humor. D.Behaving like a foo1. 15.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A.To recommend a popular book. B.To offer tips on how to keep fit. C.To warn us of the harm of stress. D.To encourage us to engage in play.

According to a study, the global decline of bees and other pollinators(授粉者)is negatively affecting the production of fruits and vegetables. 16 .
“This study shows that doing too little to help pollinators does harm to not just nature, but human health as well,”Matthew Smith,a researcher said in a statement.
17 .Rising temperatures, widespread use of pesticides and habitat loss are among them. The study shows that the population of insects has dropped by nearly half in some parts of the world. 18 .So their decline has hurt the growth of key foods.
For the study, researchers gathered data from hundreds of experimental farms in Asia, Africa,Europe and South America, finding that in 2020,growers produced 3 to 5 percent less fruits and vegetables than they would have in a world with booming insect populations. 19 .They found that declining consumption of fruits and vegetables is limiting the intake of needed nutrients and giving rise to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers.Globally, the loss of pollinators is leading to an additional 427,000 deaths yearly.
“We consume too much of the wind-pollinated crops, such as wheat, rice and corn, which are rich in carbs(碳水化合物)but relatively low in nutrients, leading to an epidemic of obesity (肥胖流行). 20 ,”David Goulson,a researcher at University of Sussex, said.Goulson added,“The most concerning aspect of this study is that, since insect populations keep dropping, this lost crop production is getting worse.”
A.Insects pollinate around three-fourths of crops B.They analyzed the causes of the production drop C.Measures have been taken to save those pollinators
D.The loss of these nutritious foods is leading to many early deaths
E.Actually, many factors are fueling a decline in the population of insects
F.Researchers also modeled how the drop in production is impacting public health
G.But we do not eat enough fruits and vegetables mostly requiring insects for pollination 第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 I never had the chance of meeting my grandmother on my mother’s side.So how is it possible that a memory of her remains in my mind?Maybe it’s the constant mention of her name or the pictures I’ve seen.Or maybe it’s a tasty dessert,Annie Belle’s Famous Pound Cake, that created a bridge connecting me with my grandmother.
I remember waking up to my mother baking her mother’s famous pound cake. The buttery smell of the batter(糊状物)would fill the house.I would pop up as if my alarm had gone off and make my way down the stairs and into the kitchen where all the magic was happening. My mother would hand me one beater(搅拌器)coated with the perfect amount of batter.Immediately my heart was full as I licked the beater clean with no trace of batter remaining.
This pound cake had an extraordinary reputation and orders began rushing in.My mother would make hundreds of cakes and I was always there, waiting for my favorite and most important job. Each time I felt closeness, like my grandmother hugging me until I lost track of time.
My mother didn’t keep this recipe as a secret and although others tried to copy this work of art, they always found something was missing.Nobody could make it exactly how my mother and grandmother could.Every step and each ingredient(原料)was given, but the outcome was not satisfying.I wondered if this had anything to do with the special pan my grandmother used and passed down to my mother—or was it deeper than that?
I knew one day I would have to attempt to bake this famous pound cake. But what if I failed? What if,like all the others who tried,I didn’t have what it takes to successfully make this family recipe? 注意:

One possible version:
The day finally came, and I purchased all the ingredients and made sure I prepared everything the night before. The morning came and I woke up extremely excited and ready to bake my grandmother’s pound cake.I ran into the kitchen and took out that cake pan I was the third generation to use it.My mother knew I was nervous,so she guided me through each step whether it was as simple as gradually adding the sugar or sifting the flour.
As my mother smiled and watched me do what she did for so many years,I couldn’ t help picturing that bridge again. The bridge that connected me with my grandmother became clearer as I was baking the cake. After what seemed a long time,I baked my first pound cake! Using the same cake pan that my grandmother used to bake her cakes,I made my perfect copy of our family recipe.I felt strong warmth and love! I swear for the first time I heard my grandmother’s voice. She whispered,“Now you are the carrier of this family tradition”
