第一节:阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Handshaking, though a European practice, is often seen in big cities of China. Nobody knows exactly when the practice started in Europe. It is said that long ,long ago in Europe when people met, they showed their unarmed (无武器的) hands to each other as a sign of goodwill. As time went on and trade in cities grew rapidly, people in cities began to clap each other’s hands to make a deal or to reach an agreement. This practice was later changed into shaking hands among friends on meeting or leaving each other. “Let’s shake (hands) on it” sometimes means agreement reached.

Do the Europeans shake hands wherever they go and with whomever they meet? No. Sometimes the Chinese abroad reach out their hands too often to be polite. It is really very impolite to give your hand when the other party, especially when it is a woman, shows little interest in shaking hands with you and when the meeting does not mean anything to him or her. Even if, for politeness, he holds out his unwilling hand in answer to your uninvited hand, just touch it slightly. There is generally a misunderstanding among the Chinese that westerners are usually open and straightforward, while the Chinese are rather reserved (保守的) in manner. But in fact some people in western countries are more reserved than some Chinese today. So it is a good idea to shake hands with a westerner only when he shows interest in further relations with you.

56. In the old days in Europe, people reached out their unarmed hands to each other ______.

A. to make a deal

B. to greet each other D. to reach an agreement

C. to show friendliness

57. The first paragraph mainly tells us ______.

C. about the relationship between handshaking and trade D. about the practice of handshaking both in Europe and in China 58. According to the text, which of the following statements is true?

A. Westerners are more reserved than the Chinese. B. Westerners are unwilling to shake hands.

6

C. We should make a judgment before shaking hands. D. We shouldn’t shake hands with European women. 59. The main purpose of the text is ______.

A. to tell us some differences between the East and the West B. to offer us some important facts about handshaking C. to introduce us to some different customs in the West D. to give us some advice before we travel abroad

B

BRITAIN is a popular tourist place, but tours of the country have pros and cons (正反两方面).

GOOD NEWS Free museums. No charge for outstanding collections of art and antiquities. Pop music. Britain is the only country to compete with the US on this score.

Black cabs. London taxi drivers know where they are going even if there are never enough of them at weekends or night.

Choice of food. Visitors can find everything from Japanese to Swedish restaurants. Fashion. Not only do fashion junkies love deeply and respect highly brand names such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen; street styles are justly loved, too.

Poor public transport. Trains and buses are promised to disappoint the keenest tourists, although the over crowded London tube is unbelievably popular.

Rain. Still in the number one complaint.

No air-conditioning. So that even splendidly hot summers become as unbearable as the downpours.

If you are a recent social science graduate who has had to listen to jokes about unemployment from your computer major classmates, you may have had the last laugh. There are many advantages for the social science major because this high-tech “Information Age” demands people who are flexible and who have good communication skills.

There are many social science majors in large companies who fill important positions. For example, a number of research studies found that social science majors had achieved greater managerial success than those who had technical training or pre-professional courses. Studies show that social science majors are most suited for change, which is the leading feature (特点) of the kind of high speed, high-pressure, high-tech world we now live in.

Social science majors are not only experiencing success in their long-term company jobs, but they are also finding jobs more easily. A study showed that many companies had filled a large percentage of their entry-level positions with social science graduates. The study also showed that the most sought-after quality in a person who was looking for a job was communication skills, noted as “very important” by 92 percent of the companies. Social science majors have these skills, often without knowing how important they are. It is probably due to these skills that they have been offered a wide variety of positions.

Finally, although some social science majors may still find it more difficult than their technically trained classmates to land the first job, recent graduates report that they don’t regret their choice of study.

. By saying that “you may have had the last laugh” in the first paragraph, the author means that you may have ____.

A. shared the jokes with computer majors B. earned as much as computer majors

C. found jobs more easily than computer majors D. stopped joking about computer majors

65. Compared with graduates of other subjects, social science graduates _____.

A. are ready to change when situations change

8

B. are better able to deal with difficulties C. are equally good at computer skills D. are likely to give others pressure

66. According to the text, what has made it easy for social science graduates to find jobs?

A. Willingness to take low-paid jobs. B. Readiness to gain high-tech knowledge. C. Skills in expressing themselves.

D. Part-time work experience.

67. The underlined word “land” in the last paragraph probably means _______.

A. keep for some time B. successfully get C. immediately start D. lose regretfully

D

Chinese people around the world are celebrating their most important holiday, Chinese New Year. But for one man in Taiwan, it’s all about business as he washed dirty banknotes (纸币) for gifts.

According to Chinese tradition, parents give their children clean, fresh banknotes at the start of the New Year. But such notes are in high demand during the time just before the holiday period, and Yao Guancheng noticed a gap in the market.

Yao Guancheng said, “When we first started this business, it was for family members who liked to collect antique banknotes. But later on, it suddenly occurred to me that this service would come in handy for the Chinese New Year. It is one of our customs to put banknotes inside little red envelopes in order to bring our children good luck.”

“To do that, people changed old notes for new ones at the banks. But here in Taiwan, there are all sorts of restrictions as to how much you can change, what days you can do that and which banks you can go to. That’s inconvenient. So I thought: Why not give people an alternative?”

He doesn’t just leave the money in water for quite a long time. He uses special chemicals that are a closely guarded secret. His services don’t come cheap; he charges about $10 for washing twenty banknotes. But during the time just before the new year holiday, he’s been in demand, cleaning people’s image to the term “money laundering (洗钱) — an illegal process by which criminals attempt to hide money from government officials because it has been earned illegally or taxes should be paid on it .”

68. The understanding part “a gap in the market” in Para. 2 means _____.

A. a business chance B. a disadvantage of the market C. the lack of banknotes in the market D. the worse situation to make money 69. Yao Guancheng’s initial (最初的) aim of running his business was to _____.

A. avoid paying more taxes B. make a healthy profit

9

C. bring children good luck D. serve old money collectors 70. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Tips on washing dirty money B. Customs of Chinese New Year C. Clean banknotes for children D. “Money laundering” for the New Year 第二节:根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult. 71 Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!

With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about making choices. In this way you can make healthy balanced decisions. 72 You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you.

Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. 73 But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself.

It is also perfectly natural at this time for you to spend more time with your friends than your family. 74 A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens.

This period is a part of the life cycle. These are some people who will be with you throughout life’s journey. There will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not even see all of your classmates again.

You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. 75 So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely! A. Choose your friends wisely. B. They will help shape the future. C. They may seem to happen quickly. D. You will probably want to be independent. E. You may appreciate what you have in your own life. F. The choices that you make from now on will be your choices. G. Your family has been with you since you came into this world.

I have just read the ad on the school bulletin and the moment I read it I took an interest in becoming one of the volunteer English teachers of the five.

Now I’m writing here to apply for this opportunity.

First, please allow me to make a brief introduction about myself. I’m Li Hua, a member of the Loving Heart Club in our school, and I have a good command of English. My two years’ experience as a tutor has taught me that working as a volunteer can build up our confidence and enable us to develop our communication skills, which are a necessity in our social life.

When I read your ad, I became fascinated. I believe that being a volunteer teacher at your village is obviously more than just teaching;it is helpful to broaden my horizons and improve my understanding of the world. Besides, by helping those kids, I feel I can make a difference to their future and make a small contribution to society. I’d appreciate it so much if you could possibly consider my application.

I’m looking forward to your early reply and please email me at ***************.cn.. Yours sincerely, Li Hua
