Teaching Contents In this unit, students will learn Part I: Brief Introduction Part II: Reading Comprehension Reading A: What you see is the real you Part III: Exercises Part IV: Grammar&Language in Use Part V: Culture tips 2. Teaching Process In the First and Second Classes Part1: Lead-in Watch a video about Sophie's World.Then, read task A on page 195 and talk about the questions:Which person has something in common with you? Which one would you most like to meet? and who are you? Part2: Words Ask students to complete task A on page 196 before class and complete task B in class. Part3: Listening and Speaking Let students listen to the tape in the class and complete Task A and B on page 196. In the Thrid and Fourth Classes Part1: Pre-reading Reading tips When reading argumentative essays, in order to keep a track of the argumentation, it is useful to make a list of the arguments and the counter arguments presented in the essay. Part 2: Fast Reading Before the thrid and fourth class, students should preview the reading A. In class, students will have 10 ms to read it again and complete task A on page 200. Part 3 Careful Reading First, listen to the tape para by para.

Second, a certain student read one para. Third, a certain student translate some sentences which have different expression in Chinese. Forth, teacher explain the difficult and complex sentences. After explaination, students should review the texte and complete task B and task C on page 201. Part 4 Language points 1. distinguished adj. very successful and therefore respected and admired e.g. He quit his job at Oxford, ending a distinguished academic career. He received the Distinguished Scientist Award for his contributions. 2. fascinating adj. extremely interesting e.g. That sounds absolutely fascinating. The book is fascinating, despite its uninspiring title. 3. mug v. to attack someone and rob them in a public place e.g. A lot of people won’t go out alone at night because they’re afraid of being mugged. The young man who mugged old ladies for pocket money had been put in jail. 4. perceive v. to notice, see, or recognise something e.g. That morning, he perceived a change in John’s mood. The patient was perceived to have difficulty in standing and walking. 5. remarkable adj. unusually good or impressive

e.g. She has made remarkable progress. He showed remarkable courage when he faced the danger. 6. substitute n. used to emphasise that something is not as good as another thing e.g. Vitamin pills are no substitute for a healthy diet. 7. suppress v. to stop yourself from showing your feelings e.g. Harry could scarcely suppress a smile. He managed to suppress his anger. Part 5: Sentence structure (1)Since we psychoanalysts have helped to bring about this confusion, let me make an effort to clear it away. (Para. 2) 既然这种理解上的混乱是在我们心理分析学家的引导下造成的,那就让我来尽力消 除这种混乱。 Since 引导的从句一般放在句首,特别是表示“既然”时。 e.g. Since no one is against it, we will adopt the proposal. 既然没人反对,这个议案我们就通过了。 (2) It is not a substitute for his behaviour in describing him. (Para. 10) 但却不能取代“外在的人”成为分析或评价一个人的标准。 本句中需要注意词组 substitute for 的用法,它的意思是“替代者,替代品”。 e.g. The coach has to find a substitute for Tim. 教练得找一个替补蒂姆的人选。 Honey can substitute for sugar in this recipe. 在这个食谱中 , 可用蜂蜜代替食糖。 Part 6: Exercise

After the class, the students should complete exercises about vocabularies and phrases from page 201 to page 202 before the next class. And in the third class, teacher will ask some students to tell answers to all class. In the Fifth and Sixth Classes Part 1: Grammer Teacher will explain this grammar again and expand knowledge about noun clauses. Then, ask students to give answers of exercise on page 204 and 205 and teacher re-correct them. Part 2: Vocabulary Building First, watch a video about euphemism, which come from a native English teacher. Second, students need to summarize information about antonyms in group. Third, ask students to give answers of exercise on page 206 and 207 and teacher re-correct them. In the Seventh and Eighth Classes Part 1:Presentation Group 8: Subcultures Students of Group 8 should prepare presentation under the title of Subcultures before class and show it in this class. The time is 15 minutes. Part 2:Culture tips Teacher and students read the small article about dreams on ancient

cultures on page 214 together and enjoy it. Part 3:Questions and Answers Students review this unit and ask question if they have, and the teacher answers the questions.
