No matter what your advertising medium is, you should always make your message easy to be understood by making it personal.
Suppose you are in real estate(房地产). You are running an ad for a neighborhood. Tell your readers the benefits of living there as if you are having a one-to-one conversation. For example, your ad can read, “You won’t have to mow(修剪)the lawn ever again! All of our properties are right on the beach. A breathtaking view without a grassy yard makes Grand Island the place you’ll want to call home. It’s your dream house.”
Limit commas in your ad. Commas everywhere really distract readers’ attention. Your message gets lost because your readers are trying to understand your long sentences. Keep your sentences short enough.
You probably have learned in elementary school that you can’t use “and”, “but” or “because” to start a sentence. Your teachers ‘lied’ to you. It’s perfectly all right to use them to begin a sentence in an ad. You were taught that because your teacher didn’t want you to make an incomplete sentence by starting it with “and”, “but” or “because”. However, remember that it is advertising so anything goes!
Relax and pretend you are talking to a friend. One way to make it easier is to just forget it. That’s right. Forget that you are writing an ad, your company needs this ad to e successful and so on. Throw out all the pressures and sit down with your computer or pen. Now, write a letter to a friend. Tell your friend about your product. When you are finished, you will have a lot of material you can use in your ad. It is a great mental trick that can help you a lot.
32. What is the author’s attitude towards the ad in the second paragraph? A. It is complete and complicated. B. It is like taking to a friend.
C. It is breathtaking D. It is formal.
33. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the author’s opinion? A. Relax when writing an ad. B. Write an ad in a formal way. C. Long sentences are not welcome.
D. You can start a sentence with “and” in advertising.
34. What does the author think of the elementary teachers’ “lie” that is used in an ad?
A. It’s stupid. B. It’s unusual. C. It’s reasonable D. It’s unbelievable.
35. In the author’s opinion, a good ad should be __________.
A. funny B. descriptive C. informative D. understandable
