Part IV Reading Comprehension

Directions: There are eight passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each question there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the ONE that you think is the best answer. Passage 1

Each day, computers help millions of people do their jobs more effectively. For example, they can help mangers decide on a future course of action, and they can then help with the follow-up checks on performance to see if planned goals are being achieved. By using accurate and timely facts supplied by data base management software, a manger can do a better job of identifying problems and opportunities. The facts retrieved by such software can then be manipulated by a spreadsheet package to help the manger plan to alternate courses of action. And mangers may not need to spend as much time in controlling when a computer can respond with a triggered report if actual performance varies from what was

41

planned. The time saved in controlling may allow mangers to give more attention to employees’ concerns, and this, in turn, may result in improved morale.

But employment benefits certainly aren’t restricted to mangers. Healthcare researchers and other scientists also use computers to conduct research into complex problem areas that couldn’t otherwise be studied. Lawyers use online legal data banks to locate precedent cases in order to serve clients better. Salespeople can receive more timely information about products in stock, can promise customers that their sales orders will be handled promptly, and can thus improve their sales performance because of the computer system. And the job duties of some office and factory workers have changed from routine, repetitive operations to more varied and appealing tasks through computer usage. For example, office workers who understand text processing, computing, and data communication usually have vital roles and are given critical office functions to perform.

1. Which of the following examples shows the controlling function of a computer? B

A. Helping mangers decide on a future course of action.

B. Helping mangers check if planned goals are reached.

C. Helping mangers save time in writing a report.

42

D. Helping mangers design a spreadsheet package.

2. Employees may have better morale if ___D___.

A. they have more time to rest

B. a computer is used in their work

C. the manger spends more time with them

D. the mangers pay more attention to them

3. Which of the following is the most essential to a successful businessman? C

A. He can use computers in his work.

B. He can handle orders promptly.

C. He can get timely information.

D. He can improve his sales performance.

4. The office duties used to be ___B___. A. difficult B. boring C. heavy D. appealing

D. Employment Benefits by a Computer

Passage 2

Last summer, my wife and I went to visit the town where we both grew up. We hadn’t been there since we were married ten years ago.

First, we went to the neighborhood where my wife spend her childhood. It hadn’t changed very much. The house where she was born was still there, but it was now a different color. “What!” cried the king, “Are you trying to make a fool of me? Who ever heard of a man having a baby?”

“Well, if the king himself orders someone to get bull’s milk for him, why can’t a man have a baby?”

Passage 4

People all over the world today are beginning to hear and learn more and more about the problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by man’s release of completely new and often artificial (人造的) substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance (物质),such as oil

49

from oil tankers into the sea.

Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three of four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which can’t be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste of resources, in terms of glass, metal and paper. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help to solve by cutting out unnecessary buying, excess use and careless disposal (处理) of the products we use in our daily lives.

1. The main cause of pollution is A .

A. the release of artificial or natural substances into the environment

B. both a litter problem and a waster of resources

C. to pay for the service

D. to produce the receipt

4. Which of the following can not help solving the problem of pollution? B

A. Cutting out unnecessary buying. B. Eating.

C. Reduce excess use. D. Carefully dispose our daily products.

5. What does the underlined word “litter” mean in paragraph 2? C

51

A. not many B. serious problem

C. bits of waste things D. industrial pollution

Passage 5

Thousands of years ago, in the middle of an ocean, miles from the nearest island, an undersea volcano broke out. The hot liquid piled higher and higher and spread wider and wider. In this way, an island rose up in the sea.

As time went on, hot sun and cool rains made the rock split and break to pieces. Sea waves dashed against the rock. In this way, soil and sand came into being.

Nothing lived on the naked soil. And then the wind and birds brought plant seeds, spiders and other little creatures there. Only plants could grow first. Only they, in sunlight, could produce food from the minerals of the soil, water and air. While many animals landed on the island, they could find no food. A spider spun its web in vain, because there were no insects for its web to catch. Insects couldn’t stay until there were plants for them to eat. So plants had to be the pioneer life on this new island.

Passage 6

In the last 500 years, nothing about people – not their clothes, ideas, or languages – has changed as much as what they eat. The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of the cocoa tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500’s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today.

The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the “Potato Famine” of 1845-6, and thousands more were forced to emigrate to America.

There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the World’s largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other

South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400’s.

According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a goatherd name Kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berries on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the “wide-awake” feeling that one-third of the world’s population now starts the day with.

She got married, and after she had children she retired from show business to bring them up. They grew up, and when they were 18 they left home.

She says, “When I decided to do the round-the-world race, my husband thought I was bored because the children had left home. He was also worried because I had never sailed before. I was not bored, but I had met some people who told me about the race.

They had taken part in it, but they had only done one section, say, from New Zealand to Australia. I wanted to do the whole ten-month journey.”

Before Molly left she did a lot of training, but it hadn’t prepared her for the

That was the worst time.”

By the end of October last year, she had raised more than £50,000 for charity.

She says, “Sometimes I ask myself, what did I do? How did I do it? But then I think, it’s the same as being a dancer. Before I left on the trip, I had trained hard. I had got very fit and had prepared myself completely. Then on the trip I was simply a good team member.”
