BecausethePMOSdevicebehavesasalow-valueresistor,thedropoutvoltageisverylow(typically230mVatanoutputcurrentof250mAfortheTPS76650)andisdirectlyproportionaltotheoutputcurrent.Additionally,sincethePMOSpasselementisavoltage-drivendevice,thequiescentcurrentisverylowandindependentofoutputloading(typically35µAoverthefullrangeofoutputcurrent,0mAto250mA).Thesetwokeyspecificationsyieldasignificantimprovementinoperatinglifeforbattery-poweredsystems.ThisLDOfamilyalsofeaturesasleepmode;applyingaTTLhighsignaltoEN(enable)shutsdowntheregulator,reducingthequiescentcurrenttolessthan1µA(typ).
Powergood(PG)isanactivehighoutputthatcanbeusedtoimplementapower-onresetoralow-batteryindicator.

Anotherpitfallassociatedwiththepnppasselementisitstendencytosaturatewhenthedevicegoesintodropout.TheresultingdropinβforcesanincreaseinIBtomaintaintheload.Duringpowerup,thisincreaseinIBtranslatestolargestart-upcurrents.Systemswithlimitedsupplycurrentmayfailtostartup.Inbattery-poweredsystems,itmeansrapidbatterydischargewhenthevoltagedecaysbelowtheminimumrequiredforregulation.TheTPS766xxquiescentcurrentremainslowevenwhentheregulatordropsout,eliminatingbothproblems.TheTPS766xxfamilyalsofeaturesashutdownmodethatplacestheoutputinthehigh-impedancestate(essentiallyequaltothefeedback-dividerresistance)andreducesquiescentcurrentto1µA(typ).Iftheshutdownfeatureisnotused,ENshouldbetiedtoground.Responsetoanenabletransitionisquick;regulatedoutputvoltageisreestablishedintypically160µs. MINIMUMLOADREQUIREMENTS TheTPS766xxfamilyisstableevenatzeroload;nominimumloadisrequiredforoperation. FB—PINCONNECTION(ADJUSTABLEVERSIONONLY) TheFBpinisaninputpintosensetheoutputvoltageandclosetheloopfortheadjustableoption.TheoutputvoltageissensedthrougharesistordividernetworktoclosetheloopasshowninFigure29.Normally,thisconnectionshouldbeasshortaspossible;however,theconnectioncanbemadenearacriticalcircuittoimproveperformanceatthatpoint.Internally,FBconnectstoahigh-impedance,wide-bandwidthamplifierandnoisepickupfeedsthroughtotheregulatoroutput.RoutingtheFBconnectiontominimizeoravoidnoisepickupisessential. EXTERNALCAPACITORREQUIREMENTS Aninputcapacitorisnotusuallyrequired;however,aceramicbypasscapacitor(0.047µForlarger)improvesloadtransientresponseandnoiserejectioniftheTPS766xxislocatedmorethanafewinchesfromthepowersupply.Ahigher-capacitanceelectrolyticcapacitormaybenecessaryiflarge(hundredsofmilliamps)loadtransientswithfastrisetimesareanticipated.
