BecausethePMOSdevicebehavesasalow-valueresistor,thedropoutvoltageisverylow(typically230mVatanoutputcurrentof250mAfortheTPS76650)andisdirectlyproportionaltotheoutputcurrent.Additionally,sincethePMOSpasselementisavoltage-drivendevice,thequiescentcurrentisverylowandindependentofoutputloading(typically35µAoverthefullrangeofoutputcurrent,0mAto250mA).Thesetwokeyspecificationsyieldasignificantimprovementinoperatinglifeforbattery-poweredsystems.ThisLDOfamilyalsofeaturesasleepmode;applyingaTTLhighsignaltoEN(enable)shutsdowntheregulator,reducingthequiescentcurrenttolessthan1µA(typ).

Powergood(PG)isanactivehighoutputthatcanbeusedtoimplementapower-onresetoralow-batteryindicator.

TheTPS766xxisofferedin1.5V,1.8V,2.5V,2.7V,2.8V,3.0V,3.3Vand5.0Vfixedvoltageversionsandinanadjustableversion(programmableovertherangeof1.25Vto5.5V).Outputvoltagetoleranceisspecifiedasamaximumof3%overline,load,andtemperatureranges.TheTPS766xxfamilyisavailableinan8-pinSOICpackage.

DESCRIPTION

Thisdeviceisdesignedtohaveanultralowquiescentcurrentandbestablewitha4.7-µFcapacitor.Thiscombinationprovideshighperformanceatareasonablecost.

APPLICATIONINFORMATION

TheTPS766xxfamilyincludeseightfixed-outputvoltageregulators(1.5V,1.8V,2.5V,2.7V,2.8V,3.0V,3.3V,and5.0V),andanadjustableregulator,theTPS76601(adjustablefrom1.25Vto5.5V).

DEVICEOPERATION

TheTPS766xxfeaturesverylowquiescentcurrentthatremainsvirtuallyconstantevenwithvaryingloads.ConventionalLDOregulatorsuseapnppasselement,thebasecurrentofwhichisdirectlyproportionaltotheloadcurrentthroughtheregulator(IB=IC/β).TheTPS766xxusesaPMOStransistortopasscurrent;becausethegateofthePMOSisvoltagedriven,operatingcurrentislowandinvariableoverthefullloadrange.

Anotherpitfallassociatedwiththepnppasselementisitstendencytosaturatewhenthedevicegoesintodropout.TheresultingdropinβforcesanincreaseinIBtomaintaintheload.Duringpowerup,thisincreaseinIBtranslatestolargestart-upcurrents.Systemswithlimitedsupplycurrentmayfailtostartup.Inbattery-poweredsystems,itmeansrapidbatterydischargewhenthevoltagedecaysbelowtheminimumrequiredforregulation.TheTPS766xxquiescentcurrentremainslowevenwhentheregulatordropsout,eliminatingbothproblems.TheTPS766xxfamilyalsofeaturesashutdownmodethatplacestheoutputinthehigh-impedancestate(essentiallyequaltothefeedback-dividerresistance)andreducesquiescentcurrentto1µA(typ).Iftheshutdownfeatureisnotused,ENshouldbetiedtoground.Responsetoanenabletransitionisquick;regulatedoutputvoltageisreestablishedintypically160µs.

TheTPS766xxfamilyisstableevenatzeroload;nominimumloadisrequiredforoperation.

FB—PINCONNECTION(ADJUSTABLEVERSIONONLY)

TheFBpinisaninputpintosensetheoutputvoltageandclosetheloopfortheadjustableoption.TheoutputvoltageissensedthrougharesistordividernetworktoclosetheloopasshowninFigure29.Normally,thisconnectionshouldbeasshortaspossible;however,theconnectioncanbemadenearacriticalcircuittoimproveperformanceatthatpoint.Internally,FBconnectstoahigh-impedance,wide-bandwidthamplifierandnoisepickupfeedsthroughtotheregulatoroutput.RoutingtheFBconnectiontominimizeoravoidnoisepickupisessential.

EXTERNALCAPACITORREQUIREMENTS

Aninputcapacitorisnotusuallyrequired;however,aceramicbypasscapacitor(0.047µForlarger)improvesloadtransientresponseandnoiserejectioniftheTPS766xxislocatedmorethanafewinchesfromthepowersupply.Ahigher-capacitanceelectrolyticcapacitormaybenecessaryiflarge(hundredsofmilliamps)loadtransientswithfastrisetimesareanticipated.

REGULATORPROTECTION

TheTPS766xxPMOS-passtransistorhasabuilt-inbackdiodethatconductsreversecurrentswhentheinputvoltagedropsbelowtheoutputvoltage(forexample,duringpowerdown).Currentisconductedfromtheoutputtotheinputandisnotinternallylimited.Whenextendedreversevoltageisanticipated,externallimitingmaybeappropriate.

TheTPS766xxalsofeaturesinternalcurrentlimitingandthermalprotection.Duringnormaloperation,theTPS766xxlimitsoutputcurrenttoapproximately0.8A(typ).Whencurrentlimitingengages,theoutputvoltagescalesbacklinearlyuntiltheovercurrentconditionends.Whilecurrentlimitingisdesignedtopreventgrossdevicefailure,careshouldbetakennottoexceedthepowerdissipationratingsofthepackage.Ifthetemperatureofthedeviceexceeds+150°C(typ),thermal-protectioncircuitryshutsitdown.Oncethedevicehascooledbelow+130°C(typ),regulatoroperationresumes.

POWERDISSIPATIONANDJUNCTIONTEMPERATURE

Specifiedregulatoroperationisassuredtoajunctiontemperatureof+125°C;themaximumjunctiontemperatureshouldberestrictedto+125°Cundernormaloperatingconditions.Thisrestrictionlimitsthepowerdissipationtheregulatorcanhandleinanygivenapplication.Toensurethejunctiontemperatureiswithinacceptablelimits,calculatethemaximumallowabledissipation,PD(max),andtheactualdissipation,PD,whichmustbelessthanorequaltoPD(max).
